Martial art, Combat sport or Self defense?
Martial art is a word off many interpretations depending on who gives the definition. One of the reasons for this is that there are a lot off different martial art styles, and even a lot off people in each style that interpretate the same style differently. Therefore we also find it important here at nunchaku-tutorials.com to explain what our understanding of the word is, and give our own definition.
First of all we like to split the concepts of martial art into three categories which is martial art, combat sport and self defense.
Combat sport
Originally martial art was developed to train soldiers so they could defend them selves on the battlefield. At that time there were no rules of war and the purpose of training your soldiers in martial arts was to teach them how to kill.
In our modern world a lot of people practice martial art, but they don’t necessarily practice it to learn how to defend them selves or to become soldiers. A lot off people practice martial art for the same reason that other people train for example football, athletics ore gymnastics. Because it improves your health, gives you a better confidence and develops social relations just to mention a few reasons. In this case combat sport is a more accurate word than martial art because the martial art is used as a sport with combat elements.
